Many year 3-7 students represent the school at a number of SAPSASA sports events with many chosen to represent Athelstone School at both District and State levels. Five SAPSASA events are decided upon each year by the Sports Committee. Traditionally our students have been involved in Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country, Indoor and Beach Volleyball and Touch Rugby. In recent years we have had over one hundred students participate in SAPSASA Volleyball tournaments with a number of our teams taking out a State Title. Students are also able to represent Athelstone School at other SAPSASA events, as arranged by their parents.
More information about school sport can be found on the Department for Education website https://www.education.sa.gov.au/teaching/sport
Out of School Hours Team Sports
A large range of competitive sports (coordinated by a sub-committee of the Governing Council) are available for students. Sporting teams are coached and managed by parents. Athelstone School fields teams in the following sports: Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Volleyball and Soccer. All parents, students and coaches are required to agree to our Athelstone School Code of Conduct.
Swimming and Aquatics
Year 6/7 students participate in the DECD Aquatics Program at West Lakes and all R-5 students participate in the DECD swimming program either at Payneham Pool or The ARC in Term 4 of each year. Instruction is provided by qualified instructors at the venues.
An R-7 Sports Day is held annually, it is one of our largest community events and a highlight on the school calendar.
There are four Sports teams at Athelstone School representing four prominent early Athelstone community members:
Amber - Blue
Stephen Amber arrived in Athelstone between 1850 and 1855, his ancestors are prominent in the local community today. Mr Max Amber has a close affinity to Athelstone School. An annual Max Amber award is presented at the Year 7 graduation.
